Teaching Data

During a typical day in most workplaces, you run into hundreds of statistics. Now, with the web, that number is growing exponentially. In fields from marketing to defense, the ability to interpret data is invaluable. However, school still fails to teach data analyzation and visualization successfully. With more and more technologies leveraging data visualization, statistics and data visualization should be a part of every high school math curriculum - not just stuck in some obscure AP class. With luck, students might even be able to visualize data in ways as awesome as this:

Explore the World (Through Statistics)

This is what we should be using in geography. Instead of staring at age old charts and memorizing capitols, we should be learning about… nay, interacting with… our world to see the trends. When Google acquired Gapminder, I was blown away by the amazing potential of their Trendalyzer technology. Toss out the textbook and learn through data visualization. Using this tool, you can easily explore the importance of the internet or how urban population affects military budget. Now, take this cool visualization and put it together multitouch technology and just imagine the possibilities for education.
