The Things I Carried

… and still do. Ethan introduced the idea of posting the items I carry every day. I like to travel light, so I try to keep the weight down. That means no wallet (just a debit card), a small knife, and a relatively light mobile phone. Of course, I could never leave the ubiquotous iPod behind. To find out more about the awesome things I carry, just check out the Flickr photo. (Complete with notes)

Hear The Phone Whistle

A couple of weeks ago Google announced they would be acquiring GrandCentral. Naturally, my interest got aroused and I signed up for the beta. Today, I learned that I had been accepted and promptly set out to investigate this service. Since I just got my (first) mobile phone a few months aog I am still in the process of getting used to the whole mobile contact thing. Well, I love what GrandCentral has done, mostly for voicemail reasons. All voicemails are stored on the GrandCentral website, so they are easily accessible from a nice interface, rather than having to listen to 1 after 1 after 1… Despite this, I don’t think it will find it’s way into the average person’s communications arsenal soon, simply for the fact that there are too many layers placed between you and the caller. Despite this, I believe the application has a lot of potential for the small business market. Small businesses cannot afford full out phone management systems, but require a little more than a simple mobile phone. A couple of features make GrandCentral especially useful for small/home businesses:

  • Call Screening: Save time (and money) by only answering important calls.
  • Notification: An email/SMS can be sent whenever you receive a voicemail. (I love this feature)
  • Greeting By Number: Have one greeting for customers, another for employees, and still another for family. (And still another for friends to call about the Poker game Friday).
  • Different Number Based Upon Caller: Send customer calls to sales, employee calls to human resources, and your wife’s calls to your mobile. (Or not)

If you have a small to medium size business, I highly recommend GrandCentral. To get an invite, just give me a call (using the button below).

iPhone

I do not have a cell phone but would love to have something as awesome as the iPhone in my pocket… multitouch has amazing potential. Just think of the uses in geography, math, or science? Instead of banning cell phones, we should be encouraging their productive use. When asked to find the population of Spain, students could whip out their cell phones and send an SMS to 466453 (Google). Within seconds, they have the answer back. Compare that to the days when you must find an expensive reference book, flip through it, find Spain, and find the population - only to realize it is 5 years outdated. Enjoy the wonders of the iPhone! Unfortunately, AT&T doesn’t serve Vermont, so I won’t be getting an iPhone anytime soon…
