Will recently led me to do some investigation into web-based mind mapping software. After a little reading, I narrowed my options down to MindMeister and bubbl.us. By registering for both, I can give a first hand perspective about which is better. Well, what better way to track it than with a mind map.

As you can see from above, I ended up deciding bubbl.us was the best for me. However, that is not because I like it much more. Actually, I believe that MindMeister is far nicer in terms of the interface. Maybe I’m just a sucker for dark blue color schemes, but I believe MindMeister was able to create a beautiful interface where bubbl.us created a (sub)standard design. However, there is the unfortunate fact that MindMeister only offers 6 mind maps for free users. Since I do a lot of mind mapping (blog posts, school projects, website architecture, etc.) I would use those 6 maps up within a couple of weeks… and I never like to recycle data in web apps. However, if you are willing to pay $4.16 a month or don’t use many maps then MindMeister is perfect for you. However, if you are a “poor” student like me, stick with Bubbl.us.

Of course, I would not be at all suprised if Google bought MindMeister and turned it into a free service.
