Taking a Break

Ocean

Sometimes you have to forget about Twitter. Sometimes you have to leave the computer at home. Sometimes you have to just use your mobile as a phone, just a phone. For the past week I have been enjoying myself by the ocean on Cape Cod. No computer. No internet. All the writing I did was with a pencil and paper and all the reading was done from a book/newspaper. Let me just say, it was very relaxing.

Of course, when I got back, the stress kicks right back in; starting with 56 emails, 7 newspapers, hundreds of blog posts, and a whole new line of the iMac. I started by going through all the emails, then the papers. But when I got to the blogs… I gave up. There’s just too many posts over a week when you are subscribed to over a hundred blogs. Anything important will come back. My question for you is what strategy do you use? How do you get back into your flow after going on vacation?

Incidentally I recently went on holiday and was too greeted by many e-mails and blog posts to read… I ended up not bothering to read the blog posts, it would have been too time consuming. I found that it was easier just to pick up from the latest entry.

Whoops forgot to ask, did you have a nice time?

Yes, I had a nice time. It was nice to get away from the internet for a couple of days.

    That’s good :-) .

Yeah I agree, it is nice to get away from it for a little bit.

I usually end up giving up like you did, just figuring that anything important enough will resurface later. Sometimes I have to wait a bit before threads begun in my absence have run their course.

Giving up on RSS seems to be a common tactic among the newly returned. From my experience, anything important does resurface later. Still, I do read a couple of the most important blogs anyways (the ones that announce new products).

A holiday without any wireless, eh? Haven’t had one of those since… well, just last year, I guess.

If i’ve been away for a while and don’t have the energy to read everything, I set my aggregator to Headlines and scan ‘em.
