Sorry, no iCrosswalk

New York State Senator Carl Kruger is proposing a ban upon using iPods while crossing the street. If successful, anyone using an electronic device while crossing the street would receive a $100 fine. 3 people have died while listening to their iPod while crossing the street and the senator apparently thinks this justifies legislation.

“When they’re tuning into their iPod or Blackberry or cell phone or video game, they’re walking into speeding buses and moving automobiles,” he said. “It’s becoming a nationwide problem.” #

This is going too far. We might as well just write laws saying “Don’t be an idiot.” Wait, that would require half the population to be police (and arresting themselves). If we want to endanger our lives by completely tuning the world out, then that is our choice. Meanwhile, if you are awae of everything that is around you, but want to be calling home, what is the problem? What’s next, not letting kids use the web because of predators? It’s the job of common sense, not the government, to keep us from being idiots.

How do you define common sense, at what age does common sense kick in? Parents and other adults need to make some decisions for kids because up to certain age children don’t have common sense, they put everything in their mouths, walk into traffic, jump from high places, etc. Does common sense come from experience, from making mistakes and learning from them?
