To K8 or not to K8

For my entire school experience I have been confined within a K-8 school. This means that from when I was in kindergarten to where I am no in eight grade I have had to deal with the same annoying policies and bureaucratic delays (though you can be sure I wasn’t calling them that in kindergarten) Throughout it all, I have been irritated with the system. Frankly, it makes no sense. Why on earth would you stick emotionally-unstable adolescents on the same buses and in the same assemblies as equally emotionally-unstable (but for different reasons) kindergarteners. When teachers are campaigning for 8th graders to be escorted in lines to each of their classes, I wish people would remember the importance of freedom as you develop yourself into an adult. The general policies and ideas surrounding a system of K-8 education make no sense.

K-8 education provides no additional opportunities for academic achievement in middle school. If anything, it hinders innovations and learning when students in a very advanced math class are required to do the exact same style of work as they were doing when the were in kindergarten. Sure, the subject matter is the same. However, the process is extremely tedious and stifles innovation. Sound anything like corporate America (minus Google). Apparently, Johns Hopkins University agrees with me that K-8 education provides no academic benefits.

Two “by the way”s: My blog just happens to be at http://betaphor.wordpress.com/, and also, what does “jhu,” the tag on this post, mean?

jhu stands for Johns Hopkins University.

As for receiving a bloglink, I would like to see some actual content on your site. So far, it has been pretty good but I am hesitant to send people to a site where there is less than 5 entries. I blogged for months before I got any audience at all - you must learn to blog for yourself and the audience will come.

    Meh.

Whatever. I do have to say, though, that that is a very good point. Also, I think maybe it would be beneficial to both of us to delete this entire conversation after you read this.
