Stay dirty, says Google

Much like my school, Google says I can’t wash with SOAP anymore. Actually, I had no plans of using SOAP any time soon since I’m not working on anything that could use that kind of data. Still, I may have wanted to use it in the future. Now, if they had a books API I would definitely be using it. Sure, I can try to clean myself up with some AJAX. That’ll turn out great - I’ll be covered in some Greek warrior’s sweat. This relationship is really falling apart. I mean, not just me and Google but me and most of the big web giants. They are all overusing JavaScript and using it for stuff it was never supposed to be used for. JavaScript is a way of adding effects to pages, making the user interface easier, and making data load faster. It is not meant as a way of sharing data across services. That’s what SOAP and XML are for. However, I do understand why they are doing this. It locks the middleman out of the equation. Since JavaScript is clientside and Google stores the script on their servers, they have direct access to the user. Geez, talk about being proprietary. Who is this starting to look like? I’ll give you a hint, it starts with an M. To think, I used to worship Google. Now they won’t even let me wash up with some SOAP.
