Portable Apps

Being the typical student geek, I have a flash drive. (Or thumb drive, or USB key, you chose) It is a cheap 1gb model which has been performing admirably for file storage. However, I never really mastered the whole portable programs thing and I ended up installing the programs I wanted on each computer in my school. (Made even harder and more tedious by having to turn off the boot protection software) Finally, I got sick of it. I just used IE and all the other preinstalled programs. Then, out of the sky like a meteor to scientists came a program for geeks. This veritable meteor of usefulness is aptly named PortableApps. It is open source and includes all of my favorite applications like Firefox and OpenOffice. Quickly, I installed it and had it running up perfectly with all my settings within seconds. It even has a boot menu and Sudoku thrown in for good measure. Check out PortableApps, you won’t be disappointed.

Indeed portable apps is great. I posted about them back in April:

    They just keep getting better.

I tried to use them a while back but didn’t have the time to make them work. This latest distribution is very easy to use and took very little time to set up - all the apps come preconfigured.
